The Only
Universal
Reality

You say that you possess the truth
and that your God is the only one;
I say the same,
and so does my neighbor.

We believe only in beliefs.
We profess love, grounded in religion,
and in its name we kill indiscriminately.

Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, and even the Pope in Rome
were yesterday and will be tomorrow the leaders
who fill our minds with theories and principles
that, as a singer once said,
are nothing unless we put them into action.

From the Crusades of the Catholic Church
to the massacre of the Twin Towers,
we all believe that we are right.

In the name of the cross or the crescent moon,
of the star or of Buddha,
some die because others believe they must die,
and few live because they believe they must live.

We expanded our lands
when Columbus set out, in the name of the Crown
and the Church, crossing the waters to reach
a virgin land where there were already
not one, but many gods.

But the timber carried too much weight,
and the feathers yielded to metal,
surrendering their gold and their virginity.

That was five hundred years ago,
and in the North it happened again when
the Protestants rebelled
against Queen Isabella, crossing the waters
to find golden-skinned princesses
who, with time, ended up
cornered, humiliated, and exiled
by decree of the government
of the new nation.

The same could be said
of other regions of the world
where many have come to kill.

In the name of the cross or the crescent moon,
of the star or of Buddha,
some die because others believe they must die,
and few live because they believe they must live.

Who is right?

Everyone and no one.

We need to believe
that someone brought us here
and that someone, in the end,
will receive us.

But how much better
it would be to devote ourselves
to perceiving, to sharing,
and to spreading, among others
and within ourselves,
the love of humanity…

The only universal reality.
